| Results & Match Reports (2009) Sunday 18th October 2009 - Premier League Gt Blakenham v Horspath (added 19th Oct 2009 Report by Geoff Gamage GT BLAKENHAM 71 HORSPATH HAMMERS 105 Horspath clinched their fifth British Premier League title ( in 7 years) with a 105 -71 win at Great Blakenham the home side did have former Hammer Chris Osborne back but brother Lewis was still out, not to mention a few faces from earlier Blakenham octets. Hammers had their Polish domiciled riders unavailable racing in the Polish Cup Final ( no they did not choose not to fly one of them in!) However with Oxford based Matty Szymczak showing his true form and Wayne Hutt having his best away showing ( unbeaten ) plus the remarkable Steve Harris bagging a twenty point maximum The Hammers could even allow a below par return from skipper Mark Boaler. Mark Carmichael, Mike Morgans Dave Carmichael and Danny Harper all scored solidly whilst Gt Blakenham relied heavily on Adam Peck with young Dan Osborne very lively, Chris Osborne started well but his recent lack of racing showed towards the end of the meeting. Race of the match was a brilliant ride from Peck in heat 8, with both Szymczak and Boaler buzzing around his back wheel inside and out he rode a perfect line to hold them at bay. Harris did however make a fine pass inside of Peck in heat 11 when both were still unbeaten. Only downside "Where was the trophy?" Gt Blakenham scorers Dan Osborne 12, Leon Mower 10, Adam Peck 17, Will Page 7, Joshua Brook 6+1, Chris Osborne 11, Ray Pike 4 Martin Syzlak 4 Horspath scorers Matty Szymczak 17, Mark Boaler 8+2, Mark Carmichael 17, Mike Morgans 12+2, Steve Harris 20, Dave Carmichael 11+1, Danny Harper 9+1, Wayne Hutt 11+1 Combination Combination Blakenham relied heavily on first team riders giving 37 penalty points away they did chip into this winning the actual match 76 -52 but of course losing by 13 in the final analysis . Sunday 4th October - British Premier League The Village Horspath (added 5th Oct 2009) Report by Geoff Gamage HORSPATH 88 BIRMINGHAM 86 When the British Premier League was envisaged in whatever project with it's secondary licences and international stars showcasing the sport this was THE type of match they were thinking of two powerful teams going tyremark to tyremark in a thriller of Hitchcock proportions with the local super heroes coming good in the end! Yes another heartstopper at The Village a fantastic match well refereed by Pete Dalley. Both teams at top strength, Hammers paying the powerful Monarchs line up utmost respect with both Rafal Dulinski and Premek Binkowski on duty, first blood to the visitors as Chris Timms took the flag with Garry Pearce third a 6-4, Hammers hit back as Steve Harris / Binkowski notched a 7-3, a brilliant gate from Mike Morgans saw him and Mark Boaler clear Marcus Wadhams for another 7-3, Mark and Dave Carmichael combined for a 6-4 Hammers eight up, gate exclusion for grid 1 Morgans in the next with Boaler taking the re-run 5-4 to Monarchs, heat 7 Wadhams who was to go unbeaten in his remaining heats took a drawn heat. Disaster struck Binkowski off one with his handlebars, frame and forks and front wheel all coming adrift resulting in a 6-3 as the Polish Ace was left at the start! Paul Heard took a drawn heat 9 interval score Hammers 46 Monarchs 42, Boaler took the drawn heat 10, with Wadhams likewise heat 11, Dulinski was excluded off one with a resultant 7-2 giving the Second City outfit a one point lead. Hammers struck back with a Boaler / Morgans 6-4, next heat a gate exclusion for Nathan Groves with Horspath taking a 7-2 via Mark Carmichael / Binkowski, another Hammers disaster as Harris shed a chain on gate 2 with Wadhams / Heard banging in a 7-2. Dulinski took a drawn heat 16 though Morgans was left on the track after a clash with Bates, the penultimate heat Binkowski was excluded for crossing inside line resulting in a 6-3 to Birmingham who now led 83-81, yes another last heat decider for the Hammers, cue the dynamic duo, cue another remarkable 7-3 match winning ride from Harris / Boaler the latter pulling of a magical pass on the first bend having taken out Timms before turning back under Heard to join Harris and start more Hammer celebrations, they now need to win at Great Blakenham for the BPL title. Two observations from this match Birmingham without doubt top contenders and twelve months on it could well be everyone chasing them for honours, the second is come the next blockbuster Gotham City Hollywood movie don't be surprised if certain cape crusaders are replaced by the Hammers last heat wonders! Sunday September 20th, The Village Horspath - Horspath v Sheffield (added 21st Sept 2009) Report by Geoff Gamage HORSPATH 85 SHEFFIELD 85 This was the old cliche a match of two halves, the first half saw Horspath capitalise on some Sheffield exclusions to lead by 8 however a confrontation in heat 9 after the race saw both Danny Harper and Pawel Kozlowski see red cards, a pity because this was a great match ridden hard but in good spirit other than that. The second had a remarkable Stars comeback. Sheffield got off with an opening heat 6-4 courtesy of Jamroczyk / Birks, Hammers went one up following an Angel exclusion for crossing the inside line with a 6-3 from Boaler / Harper. Heat 5 saw lee Smith get a gate exclusion, Birks winning but the 5-4 doubled Horspath's lead, another Angel exclusion for excessive force bought another Horspath 5-4 in heat 7, Next race Birks got a gate exclusion leaving Mark Carmichael / Harris to grab a 7-2. A drawn heat 9 saw the aforementioned red cards issued. heat 10 Hammer went 10 up a 6-4 from Boaler / Hutt. Stars started a remarkable fightback with a Angel / Pilas 6-4 in the next race, a 4-3 following a Morgans gate exclusion bought another point back for Sheffield in heat 12. a Jamrocyzk / Birks 6-3 chipped another three points back. in the 13th, When an Angel / Brown 6-4 in the 15th saw just 2 points separating the teams, heat 16 proved a disaster for the home side as Burchardt / Jamrocyzk took a 7-2 and now stars three up, this was reduced to two with a 5-4 in the penultimate race. Once again for the Hammers it was Harris / Boaler time however with two points separating the teams and Hammers having a one point lead in the Title race for once they raced for a safe 6-4 as Boaler ensured Birks stayed last. Credit to both teams, and their supporters in what was a large crowd but mostly credit to Bob Prince who had an excellent match as referee, got every decision right with no controversy. Hammers still have the title in their own hands and hope to have Rafal Dulinski available for the last two matches, as he missed today whilst racing in the Polish Championship at Leszno. HORSPATH 85 ( Mike Morgans 10+1, Dave Carmichael 12+2, Steve Haris 17+1, Mark Carmichael 13, Danny Harper 5+1, Mark Boaler 17, Mateusz Szymczak 5, Wayne Hutt 6) SHEFFIELD 85 ( Piotr Jamroczyk 16+1, Jono Birks 9, Pawel Kozlowski 6+1, Remi Burchardt 16+1, Dariusz Pilas 15, Andy Angel 12, Jamie Brown 5, lee Smith 6+1.) Cycle Speedway British Teams Finals Sunday 13th Sept 2009, East Newport Cycle Speedway Club (added 15th September 2009) (Report by Andy Whitehouse) Hammers claim narrow victory in a thriller at East Newport This final was always going to be a tough call to make and with both teams fighting for a definitive lead emotions were running high.Only two points separated the teams during the first half until heat nine which saw defending champions Wednesfields Sam Smith excluded and both teams on level scores of 43 points going into the break. The first heat after the interval saw both sides earning five points and it looked like the second half would continue where the first nine heats left off,but fortunes were about to change and heat eleven saw a Scott Doherty,Lee Aris 7-3 efeat over Horspath's Mark Carmichael and Veteren Champion Steve Harris giving the Aces a four point advantage, the next two heats saw the points evenly distributed.Heat fourteen looked like the championship decider with strong rides from both Mark Griffiths and Lee Aris giving the 2008 champions another 7-3 and a eight point advantage over their rivels. But how things can change and heat fifteen saw both Wednesfield riders excluded,Sam Smith for stopping the race after a fall and Lee Aris was a start gate infrignment allowing Horspaths Wayne Hutt and Steve Harris to ride a leisurly lap to earn an easy seven points. The atmosphere remained tense for the remainder of the match and with the scores tied on 86 points at the end of heat 18 the title would have to be decided with a three heat run off. Heat nineteen saw another win for Wednesfield's Mark Griffiths and it looked like the Aces were on course to retain their 2008 title but the next heat saw another brilliant ride by Horspaths Welsh wonder mark Carmichael and a second place from team mate steve Harris turned the tables and gave Horspath a two point advantage going into heat twenty one and all to ride for.Horspath didn't dissapoint their fans and a win from Mark Boaler ensured The Bin and the British team title went back up the M4 to Horspath. Sunday 23rd August 2009 - Premier League at Norwich NORWICH 87.5 HOSPATH HAMMERS 88.5 Horspath go to the top of the league! Report by: Tim Jarvis Horspath snatched a dramatic last race victory against Norwich. After trailing throughout the match, the Hammers snatched an amazing victory when Steve Harris and Mark Boaler combined brilliantly in the last race to score a crucial 7-3 to give Horspath victory. Isolated on gate four after Rob Hunt was disqualified for a starting infringment, Harris was excluded after cutting across Richard Williamson just yards from the start. Earlier, in heat three, Harris was excluded for slowing up the race. Now he faced his second explusion in as many races. Team manager Robyn Carter appealed to referee Allinson after which the official changed his mind and re-instated Harris. From the start, Norwich took control. With the Phil Howells/Ben Collins and Dave Solomon/Richard Hunt in dominant form, Norwich built up an eight point lead after just three races. Referee Allinson was unable to split Kieran Parr and Wayne Hutt for third place in heat five as Horspath took their first heat win of a gloriously sunny summer afternoon. Horspath were rattled as Norwich continued to boss the remaining heats going into the interval six points ahead of the visitors. Horspath won two of the three heats immediately after the break to close the gap to two points. But just as they were getting back into the match, Mark Boaler moved on grid two, the Horspath rider pointing the accusing finger to Dave Solomon on his inside. Suddenly the gap was seven points. A major shock was back on the cards. Enter Steve Harris. Using all his experience and racing skills, Harris brought through reserve Wayne Hutt for a maximum heat win, before Mark Camichael and Hutt again reduced the deficit to two with two races to go. Richard Williamson and Ben Collins sandwiched Rob Hunt into second place in the punultimate race, setting Horspath a maximum win from the final heat to take the most unlikely of victories. What a race. Harris on one, double British champion Phil Howells on two, Mark Boaler on three and Dave Solomon on the wide outside. The wise money was on Howells separating the Horspath duo, to give Norwich victory. But Harris is a wily old fox. Going down the back straight he cleverly slowed down to distract Howells, giving Boaler a split-second chance to sprint through on the inside. It was a brilliant manouvre. Howells and Solomon got in each other's way. By the time Solomons slid off on the home straight, third time round it was all over. Horspath had taken the lead for the first time in the match, but more importantly has kept their title challenge on track. The jubiliant Hammers raced on the track to embrace Harris and Boaler. This was such an important win. Without Mike Morgans, gigging it up at the V Festival, and Matuesz Symczak and Marcin Skowronek racing in the Polish League, Horspath certainly struggled. All credit to Rob Hunt, Danny Harper and Wayne Hutt for keeping them in the match when the pressure started to boil. And of course, Harris and Boaler for that remarkable match-winning ride when all looked lost, not fogetting team manager Robyn Carter who spent more time on the track than any of his riders. In all, a truly great match. Drama, excitement, controversy, protests, stand-offs in the pits, amazingly competitive racing - this had it all, and more beside. Norwich 87.5 Phil Howells 15, Dave Solomon 15, Richard Williamson 13, Lee Grange 13, Ben Collins 11, Richard Hunt 10, George Solomon 8, Kieran Parr 2.5 Horspath 88.5 Mark Carmichael 18, Steve Harris 15, Mark Boaler 14, Danny Harper 11, Rob Hunt 10, Wayne Hutt 9.5, Dave Carmichael 8, Wayne Clarke 3

Saturday 22nd August 2009 - British Veteran Individual Championship (added 24th August 2009) (Report by Ivan Pyke) Steve Harris (Horspath) gave a masterful display to retain the Paul Fryatt Builders' sponsored British Veterans Title. Scoring a faultless 20 point maximum Harris a master tactician knew two inside grids in his first two races would set him up nicely but a potential banana skin was heat 12 and an outside grid with three competent riders inside of him. A great gate and perfect first and second bend and Harris again hit the front and you could see as he punched his handle bars as he crossed the line what that win meant. Another fantastic gate in heat 14 saw win number four. Mark Newey (Leicester) and Mark Griffiths (Wednesfield) were keeping the pressure on with Newey dropping his only point to Harris in his opening ride and Griffiths dropping points only to the two leading scorers both finishing their days racing with heat wins. So Harris knew a win in heat 19 and he would retain his title and this he did with ease to can a superlative performance. Dennis Hubble (East London) got off to a perfect start but the one and only fall of the day cost him a rostrum place. Hubble made a blistering gate in heat one but things were fast and furious behind as Ian Lawrence (Filton) took 2nd place but referee Steve Copping could split Hethersett's Tim Grimes and Heckmondwike's Darren Kent for 3rd and 4th so 1½ awarded to both. Local riders Gary Brown from Somersham gave a very good account of himself always in the thick of the action and scoring a credible 15 points. Dave Solomon (Ipswich) who went through knee surgery only months ago gave his all as always and scoring 14 points will definitely be back for more and hopefully fully fit. Great Blakenhams Paul Brinkhoff cut short his holiday to take part and finishing with nine points doesn't reflect the effort he put in. Scorers: S. Harris 20, M. Newey 19, M. Griffiths 18, D. Hubble 16, G Brown 15, D Solomon 14, Errol Thaw (Stoke) 14, Norman Venson (Filton) 13, D Kent 12½, I. Saturday 22nd August 2009 - South West Junior Grand Prix (added 24th August 2009) (Report by Geoff Gammage) The 6th and final qualifying round of the South West Junior Grand Prix took place at Horspath on Saturday, 100 competitors took part in perfect sunny conditions, East Newport grabbed top spot with 267, from Horspath on 251 and Exeter third with 223, Newport 126, Poole 111, Southampton 46, Filton 14, Swindon 10. Estimated that well over three hundred witnessed a fast presentation with all the racing over before 7pm. No shocks early on as Shaun Bennett ( East Newport ) won the U8, from Hammers Jack Currell, Eben Wakefield and Callum Cooper, who fell and didn't race in the re-run. The U10 predictably went to James Robinson of Exeter team mates Will Tidball and Jack Herbert followede by the remounted hammer George Horsley. Shock in the U12 as the leading contenders didn't make the A, Poole's Harry Boucher coming 1st, from Exeter's Lauren Hookway, Newport's Jacob Soper and Adam Bennett ( East Newport) .The GP leader didn't make the A in the U14 either, East Newport's Louis Harvey winning from Ollie Sidwick ( Filton ) Aaron Coles ( Exeter) and Corey Hyde ( Exeter). Leader of the U16 wasn't racing Leighton Glover of Poole winning from Sam Dart ( Exeter ) Ryan Lewis ( East Newport ) and Aaron Hughes ( East Newport ). Thomas Reed of Exeter got the favourites back on track with a win from Horspath's Mark Carmichael, Craig Nethercott ( Exeter ) and Aaron Herbert (Exeter ) The Girls section which in the SW allows over age women had a healthy 11 competitors Rachel Edge of Horspath winning after a fall in the qualifying heats, from Jessica Lamb ( Poole ) Charlie Jane Herbert ( Exeter ) and Jemma Cosh ( Horspath ) to bring a good days racing to an end. Exeter retain the SWJGP League trophy despite heavy pressure from East Newport. The SWJGP Individual Finals day when double Grand Prix points will be on offer to add to the running totals is on October 3rd at Southampton, riders have to be in the top 16 to qualify in each age category.
Sunday 9th August 2009 - British Premier League at Horspath (added 11th August 2009) (Report by Geoff Gammage) HORSPATH 86 LEICESTER 83 A good crowd witnessed a superb BPL match at The Village, with both teams doing their best to loose the match, eight exclusions kept match referee Mike Legge busy however none were that controversial. Heat 1 saw a great ride from Mike Morgans to pass Lukasz Nowacki and then get team mate Dave Carmichael round for an opening 7-3, next race Hammers grabbed a 6-3 following a Craig Marchant tape exclusion courtesy of Steve Harris / Mark Carmichael. well those who thought this was going to be the regular Sunday Roast for the home team were soon to see this was no ordinary meat and two veg, as Leicester notched a Dan Pike / Mark Newey 7-0 following a heavy fall from Mark Boaler and an exclusion for excessive force for Danny Harper. Scores were level but not for long, Dave Carmichael / Rafal Dulinski taking advantage of a Nicky Whitehead gate exclusion for a 7-2, Monarchs hit back with a Nowacki / Mark Whitehead 6-3 following a Morgans gate exclusion, a great dash to the line from Matty Szymczak splitting the pair. Another 6-3 following a Boaler gate exclusion for Marchant / Leon Yelland put the visitors in front by a point, Nowacki / Adam Stephenson then grabbed a 6-4 but Dulinski / Danny harper relied with the same the interval score had Leicester leading 42-41 and the home crowd searching for the beta blockers, this was going to be a close one! A win for Boaler and Pike started the half with two drawn heats, another gate exclusion for Marchant resulted in a 7-2 from Dave Carmichael / Morgans, Hammers four up, Nowacki now in full flow took a drawn 13, Horspath stretched their lead with a Dulinski / Mark Carmichael 6-4. Dan Pike wrapped up his 4th win in the drawn 15th, Hammers really locked up the match with a Dulinski / Morgans 7-3 in the next race, two unbeaten riders in the penultimate heat, neither won! Mark Whitehead taking a drawn heat, fortunately for Hammers they were ten up going into the much restarted last, eventually both Boaler ( excessive force into the first bend ) and Harris ( exceeding the time limit for the final restart ) were excluded giving Nowacki / Newey a 7-0 but Horspath a close 3 point win. The decision to utilise secondary rider Rafal Dulinski in the spot originally for Marcin Skowronek, has proved vital in the last two home encounters, Dave Carmichael was different gravy in this with Mike Morgans inspirational. Lukasz Nowacki unbeaten after the first race and Daniel Pike led spirited and rejuvenated Monarchs who had they had this team all season would have certainly been up there challenging. Great match everyone including the referee. HORSPATH 86 ( Dave Carmichael 16+2, Mike Morgans 12+4, Steve Harris 13, Mark Carmichael 7+1, Danny Harper 8, Mark Boaler 6+1, Rafal Dulinski 18+1, Matuesz Szymczak 6+1. ) LEICESTER 83 ( Adam Stephenson 8, Lukasz Nowacki 18, Leon Yelland 8, Craig Marchant 7+1, Mark Newey 11+2, Daniel Pike 17, Nicky Whitehead 4, Mark Whitehead 10.) Sunday July 26th 2009 - British Premier League at Wednesfield (added 31st July 2009) (Report by Geoff Gammage) HORSPATH HAMMERS 92 WEDNESFIELD 84 Horspath maintained their challenge for the Premier League with a narrow 92-84 win at Wednesfield. The Hammers usually struggle at Ashmore Park where at least two strong BPL title dreams have bit the dust in the past. For this match 5 first team squad riders were unavailable and they relied heavily on their secondary riders Dulinski, Binkowski and Burgess especially as their top three combination riders were also not available. Wednesfield didn't have Mark Griffiths and his presence could well have tipped the scales in the Aces favour. The match started off with 4 drawn heats and a brilliant ride from Lee Aris to take Rafal Dulinski in heat 2. Aces struck first with a 7-3 from Scott Doherty and Roger Cox in the 5th. Hammers Dulinski and Mike Morgans replied in the 6th with a 7-3, and a Steve Harris / Mark Carmichael 6-4 in the 7th put Horspath in front back came the Aces Lee Aris / Dayle Peace levelling the scores in the 8th ta drawn 9th meant 45 all at the half. The second half saw the match seesaw Mark Boaler / Dulinski opened with a 7-3, Ace took advantage of a Harris exclusion with a Doherty / Aris 7-2 in the 11th, and a 5-4 from the 12th following a Morgans exclusion put Wednesfield two up. Sam Smith saved a 7-3 but got excluded for ramming in the13th however Terry Norman won the re-run to keep Aces one up. Hammers two vets Mike Burgess / Steve Haris grabbed a match swinging 7-2 following a Peace tape exclusion in the 14th Horspath now taking a four point lead, two brilliant rides from Lee Aris and Terry Norman( The latter squeezing past Dulinski on the last bend) in the next two drawn races kept the Aces in the hunt but a Morgans /Boaler 7-3 in the penultimate heat sealed the victory for Horspath. Aris went on to complete a very fine maximum in the last another drawn heat and certainly showed in this match that he was in form for next months British Individuals. Sunday July 19th - Individuals and Under 16s at Southampton (added 20th July 2009) (Report by Geoff Gamage) South West Cycle Speedway League held its Individuals day at Southampton on Sunday, a very successful day it was with 31 senior riders and 22 Under 16 riders contesting the championships, the senior event also doubled up for the region's qualifying rd of the British Grand Prix with the top 8 from the Individual riders final progressing. Despite a number of the region's riders racing in Torun's 10th Anniversary weekend in Poland there was some top quality racing, with only Swindon not represented on the well prepared Shirley Ponds circuit. The Individual Final for The Steve Galloway memorial Trophy was won by Southampton;s British Champion Gavin Wheeler for once having a good draw, The meeting basically came down to two heats at the sharpend 12 & 13, Wheeler was in both off gate one the first he sped away hotly pursued by Thomas Reed , Tom Colling and Mark Carmichael, The second he met the other then unbeaten rider Mike Morgans, Morgans though determined to get a special gate went too soon and was excluded. These were the top five riders on the day Reed dropped just that point, Morgans dropped another point to him in the 20th,Colling collected three wins finishing third whilst Carmichael finished with clubmate Morgans on 15. Ben Donohue recovered from a bad start to finish on 14 with Ben Mould consistent on 13 the final qualifier was Craig Nethercott on 12. other good performances came from Aaron herbert and Chris Shylock both also on 12. South West Under 16 Final proved to be a classic with some of the countries top U16 riders plus the newly crowned U13 Champion ( Lewis Harvey) There was a top 4 of Thomas Reed, Ben Mould, Sam Hearn and Mark Carmichael all four winning their opening rides, Mould got the better of Carmichael's challenge in heat 5, Hearn and Reed both getting a second win in the round of races, Mould took ht 9 but the big clash of the other three in ht 10 saw Carmichael shoot out of the gate Reed at one time in 4th burst through to second but a late challenge on the final bend saw him slip and Hearn beat him to the line for second place behind Carmichael. Ht 13 saw a brilliant ride from Hearn to take Poole team mate Mould both riders now on 15, Carmichael joined them taking ht 15 Reed went to 14 winning ht 16, he then lowered Mould's colours in the 17th both finishing on 18, The impressive Hearn took the penultimate race to go one clear on 19 Horspath's Carmichael made no mistake in the final race to join him on 19. The third place run off saw Reed speed out of gate two for the win, The Championship run off was a classic Hearn sped from gate two with Carmichael on his shoulder for almost three laps of high speed racing before Carmichael produced another burst of speed to round Hearn going into turn 3 of the third lap much to the enjoyment of his many fellow Welshmen , his family and Horspath clubmates to take a much deserved win in one of the memorable run-off's. Sunday July 5th - British Team Championship Quarter Final - Gt Blakenham (added 6th July 2009) (Report by Gt Blakenham) GT BLAKENHAM 82 HORSPATH HAMMERS 90 Referee : Mike Legge ( Dorset) This was a tense affair not short of incident, 4 of the opening five races were drawn, however and crucially for the home side heat 3 was a 5-4 to Horspath but James Studd came down in a battle for third with Mark Carmichael ending up with a suspected broken thumb. In fairness to the young Blakenham reserves especially Leon Mower coped well. Horspath got a 7-3 in ht 6 from Morgans and Dave Carmichael, The home side hit back in the 8th taking advantage of a Boaler exclusion for a 6-3. Ht 9 was full of incident with first Jason Ashford excluded for excessive force , then Rob Hunt followed by Dan Osborne for separate gate exclusions leaving Morgans to complete a lap for an unusual 4-0 and a six point interval lead. Second half started like the first with two drawn heats Horspath extending their lead in the 12th from a Morgans / Dave Carmichael 6-4 over the previously unbeaten Lewis Osborne. Saturday 4th July 2009 - WBYJL Norwich National Round 1 (added 6th July 2009) (Report from Spokesman Online) A record 169 competitors took part in the first national round of the Wosskow Brown British Youth & Junior League at Norwich yesterday. Despite the tremendous efforts of all the staff at Norwich CSC plus the pits marshals and referees to start on time, stage a staggering 200 races (plus numerous re-starts in the older categories) and make 80 presentations, the event had to be abandoned due to bad light just before 10 pm with the Grand Prix Finals for the Under-18s and the Girls not taking place. Competition organiser Mel Perkins explained that the safety of riders in the failing light was foremost in his mind. "While I and the referee Bill Brooke could fully understand the frustration of the affected riders and their supporters, particularly those who had travelled a long distance to go away not contesting their finals, the safety of the riders and the ability of the referee to make sound judgments were paramount in making the decision" said Perkins. The seven outstanding races will be staged as part of National Round Two at Sandwell on 1 August and will take place between the Under-14 and Under-16 categories. In fact no one deserved to loose this match which went to a last heat decider with the Hammers two points up Dave Carmichael was excluded, leaving Steve Harris on gate four against Shaun Rudman and Rob Hunt the Horspath veteran showing he has not lost his expertise of the Oasis picking off both riders to ensure the narrowest of wins for The Hammers who used Matty Szymczak for the first time in Regional racing for the on holiday Mark Boaler, Steve Harris drove through the night from Edinbrough to get to the match sheer dedication!

Monday 25th May - SW League Dv1/Conference (added 1st June 2009) (Report by G Gamage 28/05/09) On Bank Holiday Monday a good crowd enjoyed a top South West Division 1 encounter at The Village as Hammers eventually saw off a strong challenge from defending SW Champions Poole Comets 92-84 in an incident packed meeting. Hammers went down 7-3 in the opening heat but a Steve Harris / Mark Carmichael 7-3 redressed the balance. A 6-3 from Wayne Hutt / Wayne Clarke in the next put Horspath in front. A 7-3 from the Carmichael brothers Mark and Dave put Horspath 7 up but a 7-2 and 5-4 reverse saw an interval lead 44-43 to Horspath. Hammers went 4 up taking advantage of Donuhue's exclusion in heat12 , Poole hit back but two 7-3's and a 6-4 in hearts 14,15 and 16 virtually sealed the match. Mark Carmichael and Steve Harris were unbeaten receiving good support from Wayne Hutt and Mark Boaler with the rest chipping in. Horspath scorers Joe Wyatt 11, Dave Carmichael 9+1, Steve Harris+1, Matt Coulter 3, Wayne Hutt 15, Wayne Clarke 6, mark Boaler 14+1, Mark Carmichael 18+2. Saturday 23rd May - Under 13 Club Championship - Poole (added 1st June 2009) (Report by G Gamage 24/05/09) Tracking a relatively young and inexperienced side compared to other teams Hammers qualified for the British Under 13 team Championship Final at Poole on Saturday from Semi-Final 1 tying with Suffolk club Kesgrave knocking out the more fancied Exeter and Sheffield teams plus East Newport. Ben Carter led the way with 13 pts and was well backed by Callum Russell- Sharp and Jordan Richardson on 12. Marco Cooper notched 5 and George Horsley 4. score was Kesgrave 46, Horspath 46, Exeter 45, Sheffield 33, East Newport 24 The Final proved a hurdle too far but valuable experience for future years for The young Hammers. Jordan Richardson was the only one in double figures. Ipswich 52, Wednesfield 42, Kesgrave 35 and Hammers 29 were the final tallies. This gives Horspath 16 Grand prix points in the British Club Championship adding to the 12 scored at Hull in the Under 19. Geoff Gamage refereed at Swindon the home side defeating East Newport 94-82 in SW Div 1 with three hammers showing up well both Danny Harper and Rob Hunt went unbeaten with Mark Janes on 16. Mark and the injured Martin Glover are due to represent Horspath in The British Veteran Team Championship next Saturday at Great Blakenham where they team up with Steve Harris and Robyn Carter. Sunday 10th May 2009 - Sheffield - Premier League (added 11th May 2009) (Report By Shaun Hudson 11th May 2009) SHEFFIELD 98 HORSPATH HAMMERS 81 Report: Shaun Hudson
The visit of League leaders Horspath to Sheffield ensured another large crowd, who enjoyed an excellent meeting full of great racing. Sheffield knew that only a win would be good enough if they were to keep up their challenge for the Premier League title: team manager Mick Knowles still had injury worries with Jamie Brown out of the reckoning and long term causality Mitch Spear still sidelined. However the inclusion of Radek Sieradzki into the team at number 7 proofed pivotal and the starting line up for Sheffield gelled together perfectly. The Stars made the best possible start to the meeting with 6-4 from Burchardt & Kozlowski but Horspath hit straight back with the same result from Boaler & Morgans in the next race. What was to follow was three heats of inspired racing from Sheffield that saw the Stars register three maximum 7-3 heat wins in a row, to leave Horspath reeling. The Oxford side managed to stop the rot with heat 6 a 5-5, before scoring a maximum of there own which saw them steady the ship to be only 10 pts adrift at the interval.
With Horspath taking a 6-4 heat advantage after the break through Morgans & Hutt the match could have gone either way however a well taken 7-2 from Burchardt & Kozlowski over Mateus Symtrak after Mark Boaler had been excluded for excessive force, swung the match back in Sheffield's favour.
A superb heat 16 saw Sheffield seal the victory when on the last corner Andy Angell dived up the inside of Mike Morgans as Remi Burchardt went around the outside, after Morgans had kept the Sheffield pairing behind him for the previous three and three quarter laps. A true team effort by Sheffield saw Jono Birks top score with 16 while four of his team mates all contributed 14pts each with the hard working Sieradzki chipping in 13 from reserve, Steve Harris top scored for the visitors with 16 and received good support from Morgans & Boaler.
The Premier League title race is very much back on as Sheffield stamped there authority on an excellent competitive match however with good wins for Birmingham, Wednesfield and Poole today, this years championship could go right down to the wire.

The Conference match saw 9 year old George Horsley steal the show both from the gate and behind Hammers had too much especially as Jordan Richardson and Jack Smith also shone. Rachel Edge using her experience to team ride whilst Richard Hayes sped to a maximum for the Saints receiving good support from Josh Robertson. Sunday 26th April - Horspath Village, Oxford - Premier League (added 26th April 2009) (Report by G Gamage 26th April 2009) HORSPATH HAMMERS 103 NORWICH STARS 72 The Scoreline doesn't really do justice to Norwich who made The Hammers work hard for their points, with some characteristic from behind racing from Mark Boaler and Wayne Hutt, the latter showing his true form around The Village. Boaler went through the card his partnership with Dave Carmichael particularly rewarding. A fall for Mike Morgans and an exclusion for Matuesz Szymczak helped contain the home side plus some spirited riding especially Lee Grange, Leigh Cossey and Ian Grange all having their best matches at The Village.Generally though Hammers were solid throughout their order. Special mention too for the referee Mr Bob Prince who combined keeping the lid on things and allowing proper team racing with ease. Race of the match saw Wayne Hutt round both Norwich riders in heat 11 on the last bend to gain a 7-3 , a promoters dream! which had the crowd on its feet. Saturday 25th April - Exeter - British Junior & Youth League (added 26th April 2009) Report by G Gamage 26th April 2009) EXETER 253 HORSPATH 216 EAST NEWPORT 177 The Juniors were at Exter for the British Junior League. Individually Callum Cooper, Jack Currell and Max Russel-Sharp made the U8 Grand Prix A Final, George Horsley the U10 A Final with Alfie Wakefield also making a final. Ben Carter reversed the order in the U12 beating Jordan Richardson in the A FInal, I think these two will be battling each other all season. Marco Cooper had two exclusions didn't make a final whilst Ben Green again good improvement in the C Final. U14 Lee Clarke lost out on count back was second in the B Final. Callum Russell-Sharp third in that with Jake Carter third in the C Final. An unlucky exclusion cost Wayne Clarke in the U16, but he did win the B Final with Matt Coulter third. Mark Carmichael was third in the U18 having drawn grid 4 in the final. Rachel Edge also off 4 won the girls U14-U18 section again. Think that was all but if I've missed anyone apologies, thanks for all those who supported the riders down there in Devon. Photos to follow shortly.

Sunday 12th April - Leciester - Premier League (added 14th April 2009) (Report by Tim Jarvis) LEICESTER 78 HORSPATH HAMMERS 96 An under strength Leicester side were no match for a very competent title chasing Hammers outfit. The home side kept things level until heat six but then two fairly harsh exclusions, the first against Craig Marchant and then for Carl Jarvis, whilst both were battling for the lead, cost the Monarchs dearly.
A further maximum heat advantage for the visitors in heat eleven after Pike suffered a machine failure virtually wrapped things up for Horspath, although the Leicester side continued pushing hard they never looking like making inroads into the deficit.
Skowronek and Boaler were the Hammers top men whilst both Harris and Morgans were full value. Leicester are currently lacking top riders, however all those on show today gave it their all, but against a team like Horspath it's very difficult to get a result without a couple of top men in the squad. Saturday 4th April - Southampton - WBY&J League Round 1 (Report by Tracy Green 7th April 2009) Horspath gained a very impressive 212 points on Saturday taking second place to Exeters 216. Congratulation to Jordan Richardson for taking first place in the Under 12s and Ben Carter who came in second. In the Under 10 Horspath showed an impressive result with three riders, Callum Cooper, Alfie Wakefield and Jack Currell taking second, third and fourth place. In the Under 10 George Horsley came third in his first ever match.Wayne Carke took fourth place in the under 16 and Mark Carmichael took second place in the Under 16. And finally congratulations to Rachel Edge for winning the Girls Finals. All our Junior riders raced well on Saturday and it was great to see such team spirit cheering each other on (with the loudest encouragement coming from the parents and family of the riders!). All the riders rode well considering many of them were competing for the first time. The minibus was a great success and the riders enjoyed going to Southampton together, however driver Gordon Clarke was less than impressed when they found the battery flat at the end of the day!! From now on the doors will have to remain locked during matches.....otherwise it will be a jump start at the end of every match! For photos, please go to our 'Photographs - Jnr League' web page. Sunday March 29th - Horspath Village, Oxford - Premier League (Report by G Gamage 29th March 2009) HORSPATH HAMMERS 101 WEDNESFIELD ACES 72 A match much closer than the scoreline suggests, Horspath were without Polish star Marcin Skowronek who had to race for Leszno in the Polish League and drafted in Wayne Hutt. Wayne (affectionately: "Chip Butty") is no slouch around The Village and notched a credible 12+2. The Aces cleverly utilised former British Champion Lee Aris as tactical reserve and he was in fine form notching four consecutive wins before Mark Carmichael took the first BPL point off him of the season. After four races only one point divided the teams however Hammers were in good form getting stronger as the match progressed led by the unbeaten Mark Boaler and Mike Morgans who dropped just a point to Aris. With strong back up throughout the order whilst only Terry Norman and Chris Jewkes supported Aris with Scott Doherty getting three exclusions. Dave Carmichael had two for the home side but the Hammers strength indepth minimised the effect. With Skowronek due to return plus their Swindon based riders haven't raced yet Horspath look to have a solid base to mount a title challenge and erase the nightmare of the 2008 season. Horspath 101: ( Mike Morgans 19, Mark Boaler 18+2, Steve Harris 14+1, Mateusz Szymczak 13+1, Wayne Hutt 12+2, Dave Carmichael 9+1, Mike Burgess 8+2, Mark Carmichael 8+1.)

Sunday 22nd March - Newport International Sports Village - South West Conference (Report by G Gammage 22nd March 09) NEWPORT STARS 72 HORSPATH HAMMERS 78 Hammers U18 team started the season with a fine six point away win at the large wide open spaces of the NISP, also achieved their aim to not only win the match but also give vital team racing experience to their young riders coming through the Hammers Junior system. This despite being without 2nd Heat leader Joe Wyatt. After a drawn first heat Hammers sped to a 7-3 via Matt Coulter / Wayne Clarke. Newport took advantage of a Rachel Edge fall in the next to reduce this lead with a 6-4. Hammers hit back with a Jack Smith / Mark Carmichael 7-3 and a Wayne Clarke / Coulter 6-4. The strong Lucien Burnell-Jones / Lewis Beresford pairing notched a Stars 7-3 in the 6th heat, again though the Smith / Carmichael pairing replied in kind with another Hammers 7-3 in the next. Rachel Edge / Lee Clarke grabbed a 6-4 in the 9th which put the visitors 10pts clear and time to introduce the reserves in the next couple of heats the latter bringing another Burnell-Jones /Beresford 7-3 to reduce the arrears to 6. However Hammers then went ten clear in the 13th heat with a fine pass from Jordan Richardson to join Coulter for a match winning 7-3, despite the Stars hitting back with a 7-3 of their own in the penultimate race it was all too late as Hammers rode out a drawn last heat when they had the luxury of only needing one rider to finish to take the points. On this form the Hammers youngsters can look forward to a good conference league season especially with Wyatt back in the fold. Hammers scorers Mark Carmichael 15+3, Jack Smith 13, Wayne Clarke 13+3, Matt Coulter 13, Rachel Edge 10, Lee Clarke 8+1, Jordan Richardson 4+1 ( 2 rides) Marco Cooper 2 ( 2 rides).
Sunday March 15th Harbourside Park, Poole - Premier League (Report by GGamage 16th March 09) POOLE COMETS 81 HAMMERS 97 This was more like The Hammers that won four consecutive titles and twice runners up the previous six years than last years wooden spoonists as a very professional performance saw them get their 2009 British Premier League season off to a flier with a 97-81 win at Poole. The Comets may not have been at full strength but were tracking four riders that raced a month in Australia and led by British Champion Gavin Wheeler. Horspath had worked hard to get clearance from the Polish Federation for Marcin Skowronek to return to the Hammers colours with the Polish international flying in late Saturday resuming his three year stint at the Village. A master stroke, as was the inclusion on a secondary licence of Wales' World Cup rider Mike Burgess from Filton. The balance of the squad looked good in this opening encounter and the infamous Hammers team spirit was back for all to see, Hammers took the lead in the opening heat 5-4 then extended it with a 6-4 from Mark Boaler / Mike Morgans.a 7-3 in heat 7 from Dave Carmichael / Steve Harris took the lead to 7. They kept that to the interval score 48-41. Morgans / Mark Carmichael grabbed a 6-4 in heat ten then Morgans pulled off a brilliant pass on Arron Lowey to join Boaler on a 7-3 in heat 12. This was extended further with a great last to second from Mark Carmichael to join Steve Harris in another 7-3 in heat 14. Poole hit back with a 7-3 in the next but a 6-4 from Boaler /Dave Carmichael in the penultimate heat with two drawn heat either side saw out the 16 point away win. Hammers scorers Mark Boaler 18+1, Marcin Skowronek 16+1, Steve Harris 16+1, Mike Morgans 16+1, Mateusz Szymczak 10+3, Dave Carmichael 9, Mark Carmichael 6+1, Mike Burgess 6. Combination Hammers Combination went down by 12 points 71-59 to their Poole counterparts who looked fitter ( four had ridden in oz) and more experienced. Wayne Hutt was unbeaten in his three rides but lacked support.Lee Clarke looked good for his 11 from three. Hammers scorers Matt Coulter 5+1, Wayne Hutt 12, Joe Wyatt 9, Rachel Edge 4+1, Martin Glover 5+1, Wayne Clarke 7, Jordan Richardson 6+1, Lee Clarke 11. | |
